RMG workers block Airport road, demand due wages

A number of ready-made garments workers are blocking the Airport intersection road demanding due wages and salaries.

They blocked the road around 11am on Thursday and were still there till the report was filed at 3pm.

Airport police Sub-Inspector Fayjul Islam confirmed the matter, but he did not disclose the name of the garments factory.

He said, though the garment factories are located in Dakshinkhan area, they have blocked the Airport intersection road.

The higher up police officials are handling the matter, he further added.

The government earlier asked the RMG factory owners to pay wages by April 16 amid the coronavirus pandemic after Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) had announced shutdown of all factories till April 25.

Still, many garment factories have not paid the due wages and salaries.

Locals said it is a vulnerable situation for workers as gatherings like this can increase coronavirus transmission. The issue regarding their salary allowance should be resolved quickly.

Workers of two other garment factories have also been protesting on the roads of Kamlapur area on Thursday morning.

Motijheel police's Sub-Inspector Syed Ali said that the workers of Binni Garments Ltd and Sarder Garments took to the streets demanding due wages.

Later, the garment factories’ owners assured them that they will pay their due wages today, he added
