Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina urged countrymen to perform Taraweeh prayers in their homes during the month of Ramadan.
She made the statement while addressing a videoconference with representatives and officials of the nine districts of Dhaka division, on Thursday morning.
The videoconference was aired live on state and private television channels from the prime minister's official residence Ganabhaban.
Citing examples of Saudi Arabia, Vatican City, and some other countries which are famous for religious activities, she said: “Daily prayers have been suspended at mosques even in Saudi Arabia. They have also suspended Taraweeh prayers at mosques."
She said: "Pagodas, temples, and churches of Vatican City have also stopped public gatherings. We have to learn from them.”
“We will have to follow the instructions of the Islamic Foundation regarding Taraweeh prayers. You have to perform it at home instead of the mosque, because there is a chance of getting infected during public gatherings like this."
The prime minister continued that during the month of Ramadan transportation of goods will not be interrupted.
On April 6, the Bangladesh government suspended prayers for the public at all places of worship and religious institutions across the country in a bid to stop the further spread of the novel coronavirus.
As of Thursday, Bangladesh has recorded a total of 60 deaths from coronavirus. The total number of coronavirus cases in the country now stands at 1,572.
Meanwhile, at least 134,616 people were killed while around 2,083,326 were infected by the virus across the world till Thursday morning.
