Garment workers stage demo for due salaries

Workers of a garment factory today staged demonstration on Dhaka-Sreepur road in Sreeur upazila of Gazipur demanding their due salaries for three months.

Several hundred workers of MHC Apparels Limited held the demonstration for three hours on the road in Bhangnahati area since 9am, our local correspondent reports.

They withdrew the blockade from the road after factory authorities sat with them for a discussion and gave assurances of giving out the salaries by April 22, said M Idris Ali, deputy general manager of MHC Apparels.

Meanwhile, the workers of Hasin Sweater factory also took position in front of their factory around 9am on similar grounds.

They alleged that the factory authorities were supposed to disburse their salaries via bKash transfer yesterday.

Since they did not receive any money from the authorities till today morning, they gathered and staged the demonstration, they said.

Siddiqur Rahman, superintendent of industrial police in Gazipur, said that the workers of Hasin Sweater factory tried to block Dhaka-Mymensingh highway in Mulaid area but lawmen intercepted them.

When they hurled brick chips at the police, the law enforcers used teargas shells and dispersed them from the area, the SP said.
