Employees of Sakib’s agro farm hold demo over unpaid wages

Workers at Shakib Al Hasan Agro Farm limited, a crab and swamp eel farming facility owned by national cricketer Sakib al Hasan, held a demonstration in Shyam Nagar area of Satkhira district for unpaid wage on Monday.

Local officials said dozens of employees of the farm, which sits on a 14 acre plot in Burigoalini area of the district, blocked an adjacent road demanding their wages before a patrol team of Rapid Action Battalion reached the spot and dispersed them.

Burigoalini Union Parishad chairman Vabatosh Kumar Mondol told New Age he rushed to the spot on information and spoke to the officials over the matter.

‘We asked them to clear the wages by April 30. After that we will take stern action,’ he said.
Mohidul Islam, a worker at Shakib Agro Farm, told our correspondent that he was passing a hard time due to unpaid wages.

‘We are not getting any salary for four months. I am going through hard times. I have no food in my house,’ he said.

Another worker Monowara said she was also suffering.

‘I have to work in the crab farm because I could not manage any other way for living. But we are not getting our salary for four months,’ she said.

Kamrul Islam, a UP member, told New Age quoting the employees that the farm stopped producing crab due to less demand abroad in the wake of coronavirus pandemic.

Sakib, who is currently in USA with his family, is the chairman of the company.

Former cricketer Sahgir Hossain Pavel looks after the farm in his absence.

Pavel could not be reached despite repeated attempts.
