Landlord arrested for throwing out tenant for rent

Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) have arrested a landlord for allegedly throwing out her tenants (a family of five) who were unable pay a month’s rent amid the coronavirus lockdown.

The landlord Nur Akhter Shampa was arrested from Dhanmondi area on Tuesday evening.

Later she was handed over to Kalabagan police station.

Earlier, the tenants' family had filed a case against Shampa at the Kalabagan police station for throwing them out of their flat very late at night.

The case details include -- forcefully entering the their flat, threatening them with murder, hijacking gold, and forcefully throwing the family out on the street.

RAB 2 Company Commander Majr HM Parvez Arefin said upon receiving the information, RAB along with the victims' family went back to their Kathalbagan rented house but was unable to enter it as Shampa (the landlord) was not there and she had also locked the front gate.

When RAB called her over phone she said she was in the Saydabad area.

However, she was tracked in Dhanmondi and was arrested from there.

Maj Parvez said: “We are on the lookout so that no landlord can do such things in the future.”

On Saturday, around 10:30pm, Shampa threw out the family of five including a two month old child, as they lag behind paying only one month’s rent.

Earlier, the government had urged landlords to not put pressure for rent on tenants, amid the lockdown enforced to contain the coronavirus outbreak in the country,.
