21 doctors among 91 health professionals infected in Gazipur  

 

A total number of 91 people, including 21 doctors, 24 nurses and 46 health workers, have tested positive for the novel coronavirus till Wednesday in Gazipur.

Among them - 20 are from Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib Memorial Hospital, 14 are from Kaliganj Upazila Health Complex, eight are from Kapasia Upazila Health Complex, two are from Shaheed Taj Uddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital and rest of the health workers were operating in different hospitals of the area, confirmed, Mohammad Shahin, health officer of Sadar’s Health and Family Planning Department.

He said: "Till Monday, at least 91 health staff have been infected with the coronavirus according to the website of IEDCR. They are now undergoing treatment in different hospitals of the district."

Shahin said they could not know the exact number of Tuesday and Wednesday from the district’s Health Department for some unknown reason.

According to the Institute of Epidemiology Disease Control and Research (IEDCR) website, a total of 269 coronavirus cases have been confirmed in Gazipur district till Tuesday morning.

Seeking anonymity, a doctor of Shaheed Taj Uddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital said he recently operated in Green Hospital of Gazipur. While they were in surgery on April 14, a fellow surgeon had sneezed and they banned him immediately from the operation theatre.

“Upon sending his sample to IEDCR, we found out on Monday that he is infected from the virus and now we can be too,” he said.

The fifty-eight staff of the health department and 10 policemen are among 161 people who have tested positive for coronavirus in Gazipur.

The local administration put all markets under lockdown but it could not deter the people from carrying out their usual business. Some markets are operating as they do under normal circumstances. Especially the low-income people are not following the rules.

Besides, hundreds of readymade garment workers are seen holding demonstrations and processions to press for various demands.

But a number of locals said the government-announced shutdown has had very little impact as people continue to flout rules of social distancing and staying indoors.

Bangladesh has confirmed the number of deaths to 120 til Wednesday while 390 more people tested positive for coronavirus over the same period, raising the total number of confirmed cases to 3,772.
