Gazipur RMG factory workers stage demo, block road demanding dues

Workers of a ready-made garment factory staged a demonstration, vandalised and burned motorcycles and cycles, and blocked Dhaka-Mymensingh highway on Monday as their factory, at Bhogra in Gazipur, was shut down without paying their arrears.

Additional superintendent of Gazipur Industrial Police Md Jalal Uddin said that authorities of Bhogra’s Stylish Garments factory gave a notice to the workers in the last month.

The notice said that the factory authorities would pay all the dues of the workers till April 30 and shut down the factory.

However, 30 workers and 80 staff of the factory did not get 60 per cent of their due wages, Jalal Uddin said.

Affected workers of the factory had been protesting at the incident for the last two days and they were urging the authorities to pay their dues.

As their demands were not met in the stipulated time, the workers gathered in front of the factory in the morning and vandalised the surrounding garment factories and set three motorcycles and eight bicycles near Crown Fashion factory on fire.

Later, industrial police fired tear gas and brought the situation under control.
