2 more cops die of Covid-19 in Dhaka

Two more policemen of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) have died of Covid-19.

Assistant Sub-Inspector Abdul Khalek, 36, and Traffic constable Ashek Mahmud, 42, died on Thursday. As of now, three policemen have died of the virus.

Abdul worked in Police Order Management (POM) while Ashek worked in North Traffic division.

DMP Deputy Commissioner (media) Masudur Rahman confirmed the matter.

According to the POM, Abdul Khalek was placed in quarantine at a hotel in Arambagh area after showing symptoms of coronavirus. His samples were sent for tests on Wednesday and came back positive.

When he was found unconscious in his hotel room later in the day, he was rushed to the Rajarbag Police Hospital, where the doctor on duty declared him dead around midnight.

Abdul Khalek’s hailed from the Jhopkhali village of Barguna’s Betagi upazila. His father's name is Aziz Mridha. He is survived by his wife, a son, and two daughters.

Meanwhile, DMP Traffic North division assistant commissioner (admin) Badrul Hasan said that Ashek Mahmud, a constable working in the airport area, was kept in the institutional quarters of Siddheswari School and College, under police supervision, after showing symptoms of coronavirus.

His samples were sent for tests on April 26 and came back positive the following day. Following a deterioration of his condition on Wednesday, he was admitted to Rajarbagh Police Hospital, where he was kept in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). He died at around 9:30 pm, Badrul Hasan added.

Ashek Mahmud hailed from Jamalpur’s Malandoho upazila. He is survived by his wife and two sons.
