Newborn sold to pay hospital bills, returned to mother by police

A police officer returned a newborn to his mother, after her family had to sell the child to a childless couple in order to clear the hospital bills.

Keya Akhter gave birth to a baby boy at a private hospital, Central Medical Hospital in Gazipur, where she had to go through C-section surgery on Friday.

Both the child's father Sharif Hosain and mother Keya are garment workers. They failed to pay Tk25,000, accumulated as hospital bills during Keya's stay at the hospital since April 21.

Keya and Sharif sold their newborn to a childless couple in exchange for the unpaid bills and left the hospital.

On being informed of the incident on Friday, Gazipur Metropolitan Police Commissioner Anwar Hossain paid the childless couple their money back and returned the newborn to his mother. He also provided the couple with Tk5,000 so they could attend to the needs of the newborn.

Netizens appreciated the commissioner’s noble act after it went viral on Facebook.

Commissioner Anwar Hossain said: "It's unfortunate that the family had to sell their child due to lack of money. But I am very happy to have returned the newborn to his mother."
