A big fish going after a small fry: Khokon calls out Taposh on corruption

Bringing allegations of corruption against Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Mayor Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh, former mayor Sayeed Khokon today said Taposh has lost eligibility for the post.

The former DSCC mayor made the allegations at a human chain, held in front of the Supreme Court in Dhaka this afternoon.

Reading out a written statement, Khokon said, "Taposh has been very vocal against corruption since he took charge as the mayor. I would tell him, a big fish lecturing small fry on corruption is ironic."

"If you want to develop a corruption-free administration, first of all, make sure you're free of corruption. Then look at the small fry," Khokon said, referring to Taposh.

Khokon alleged that Taposh has transferred hundreds of crores of taka to Madhumati Bank (owned by Taposh) from DSCC. "By investing the money, he is making profits worth crores of taka," Khokon claimed.

"On the other hand, the poor employees of the city corporation are not getting their salaries for months, and various development projects have been stalled due to lack of funds," Khokon said.

Through such activities, the mayor has lost his eligibility to hold the post as per Article 9 (2) (Ja) of the second chapter of the City Corporation Act 2009, Khokon said.

He further said, "The eviction drive carried out by the city corporation in Fulbaria Market is completely illegal."

The human chain programme was organised, demanding rehabilitation of the shopkeepers affected by the eviction drive.
