Jubo League leader arrested for stealing 49 computers from BSMRSTU

Police have arrested an expelled Jubo League leader for stealing 49 computers from the central library of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Science and Technology University (BSMRSTU) in Gopalganj.

Palash Sharif was the president of Gopinathpur Union Parishad Jubo League in Gopalganj Sadar upazila and got expelled after the allegation of theft. He is the brother of the union’s chairman Aminul Islam Sharif alias Bachchu Sharif.

He was arrested after police conducted a drive in Jolirpara area in Muksudpur upazila on Sunday afternoon, confirmed Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Gopalganj police station Md Monirul Islam.

On July 26, 2020, 49 computers were stolen from the university's library. Later, on August 10, 2020, the then registrar of the university, Prof Md Nuruddin Ahmed, filed a case with Gopalganj Sadar police station, the OC added.

A total of nine people, including a university student, have been arrested so far in this case.

Gopalganj Sadar Upazila Jubo League president Jahed Mahmud Bappi said Palash Sharif was allegedly involved in the computer theft. For which, he was expelled from the Jubo League on August 13, 2020, on the advice of the district president and general secretary.

So far, police have recovered 34 of the 49 computers from a hotel in Dhaka while the rest are still missing.
