Use country’s reserve to save poor during Covid: Zafrullah

Gonoshasthaya Kendra founder and freedom fighter Zafrullah Chowdhury on Saturday urged the government to use the reserve of the country to save the poor during Covid crisis.

He made the demand while inaugurating a food distribution programme among the urban poor in Dhaka city.

The programme was held in front of Gonoshasthaya Nagar Hospital at Dhanmondi in Dhaka.

Zafrullah opined that keeping several billions of taka as reserve money idly would bring no benefit while common and poor people were suffering a lot.

He called on prime minister Sheikh Hasina to use part of the reserve money for the welfare of the poor during the Covid crisis.

Gonoshasthaya had taken initiative to provide food items to 600 poor families in Dhaka, Gazipur, Ashulia and Chattogram’s Banshkhali, Zafrullah said.

Zafrullah called on the government to take immediate steps for providing food and cash aid for two and a half crore poor families across the country.

The food package contains rice 20 kg, ata 4 kg, potato, pulses, onion, oil, salt and other necessary commodities.

Gonoshasthaya Kendra chief executive officer Monzur Kadir Ahmed, freedom fighter Istiaque Aziz Ulfat and the Kendra media advisor Jahangir Alam Mintu also spoke.
