Police, BNP activists clash in Nayapaltan; 50 detained

Police and BNP activists locked in a clash in front of the party's Nayapaltan headquarters in Dhaka this morning.

At least 50 BNP men were detained from the spot, said Salahuddin Mia, officer-in-charge of Paltan Police Station.

Witnesses said the clash ensued after BNP men threw brick chips on police who retaliated with charging batons.

BNP was scheduled to hold a programme protesting the communal attacks across the country during the Durga Puja celebration.

The party leaders claimed that the government has failed to protect the country's communal harmony.

But in the morning, BNP's Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir cancelled the protest programme and asked the party activists to leave Nayapaltan.

After the announcement, BNP attacked police, leaving several law enforcers injured, said Abdul Ahad, deputy commissioner of Motijheel Division Police.

As they threw brickbats on police, the law enforcers were forced to charged batons on them, the deputy commissioner said.
