Jamalpur's Dewanganj Municipality Mayor Shah Newaz Shahanshah has been suspended, according to a notification of Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Co-operatives.
The notification was signed by Farzana Mannan, deputy secretary, Local Government Division.
The allegations against him include, slapping the upazila secondary education officer during a Victory Day programme on December 16, for which a case has been registered in Dewanganj Police Station.
Since then, investigations have been launched into allegations against the mayor.
It further said that Mayor Shah Newaz's actions were "unethical, including misuse of power and misgovernance, and that they were inappropriate in the eyes of the administration and were against public interest."
According to Section 31 and Sub-section (1) of the Local Government (Municipality) Act, 2009, the mayor has been suspended, it added.
Earlier yesterday, he was expelled from the ruling party. The decision was taken at an emergency meeting of Jamalpur district unit of AL last night, said a press release.
