BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Friday urged law enforcers not to violate the constitution and ensure the security of the country and its people instead of ‘serving any particular party and individuals’.
“Neither Awami League nor any person is the lord or owner of the country. This country belongs to all and the administration is run by taxpayers’ money. So, I would like to urge those are in the law enforcement agencies and administration not to violate the constitution,” he said.
Speaking at a rally, the BNP leader also said the constitution has entrusted the law enforcers with the responsibility of providing security to the state and its people. “You’re not given the responsibility to ensure the security of only a specific party and individual.”
As part of BNP’s countrywide programme, its Gazipur district unit arranged the rally at Shaheed Barkat Stadium, demanding party chairperson Khaleda Zia’s advanced treatment abroad.
Fakhrul said people want a change in power as they have got fed up with the ‘misrule and repression’ by the Awami League government.
Describing Khaleda as the first female freedom fighter of the country, he said people want the government to allow her to receive treatment abroad.
Recalling Khaleda’s role in the long struggle for the restoration of democracy in the country since the mid-80s, the BNP leader said she has been now fighting for life in a hospital in the capital being subjected to the wrath of the current regime.
“I urge all to pray to Allah so that she can return among us after recovery from her illness. Let’s get united and take a vow to arrange proper treatment for her and establish a pro-people government ousting the current monstrous regime,” he said.
Stating that the nation is going through a serious crisis for lack of democracy in the country, Fakhrul said their party must be ready to carry out a movement to get rid of it in a disciplined manner. “We’ve to build our party in an organised way maintaining discipline, and we’ve to be prepared to make more sacrifices for waging a greater movement.”
The BNP leader also asked his party colleagues to mobilise public support for making their ongoing movement a success.
“We won’t be able to win this war with only emotion and slogans. We’ve to carry out the movement together with people in an organised and disciplined manner,” he said.
