EC trying to hold staged elections: GM Quader

Jatiya Party Chairman GM Quader today said the Election Commission is trying to hold a "staged national election" and that most of the people in the country think that EVMs are rigging machines.

"Many doubt whether the Election Commission will be able to hold a free, fair and acceptable election. It seems that the EC is planning to implement an agenda," GM Quader, also deputy leader of the opposition in parliament, said while talking to reporters at the Jatiya Party chairman's Banani office.

In response to a query, Quader said, there is no crisis in Jatiya Party and the party is not on the verge of splitting.

About JP chief patron Raushad Ershad's recent move to hold the party's council, GM Quader said, "We respect her [Raushan Ershad] very much. She repeatedly said that she does not want to be the chairman of Jatiya Party."

"Raushan Ershad repeatedly expressed her satisfaction and said that the party is now doing well," he added.

Asked about JP's decision to remove Raushan from the post of the Leader of the Opposition in parliament, GM Quader said, she is unable to contribute as an opposition leader for almost a year due to her illness.

"In the interest of the party, we have decided to remove her from the post of Leader of the Opposition," he added.
