Police sue 17 BNP men over Brahmanbaria clash

Police filed a case against 17 BNP leaders and activists over yesterday's clash in Bancharampur upazila of Brahmanbaria that left a Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal man dead.

Sub-inspector (SI) of Banchharampur Model Police Station Afzal Hossain filed the case with the police station last night, said Additional Superintendent of Police (Nabinagar circle) Md Sirajul Islam.

Rafiqul Islam, a former organising secretary of Jubo Dal Banchharampur upazila unit and a resident of Charshibpur village, was made the prime accused in the case, the SI said.

Some 100 to 120 unnamed persons were also made accused in the case, the police official said.

Meanwhile, the body of Chhatra Dal activist Saiful Islam Nayan, who was killed in police firing during a clash between the law enforcers and BNP supporters, were kept at Dhaka Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy.

After the autopsy, his namaz-e-janaza will be held in front of BNP's Nayapaltan central office, said Liaqat Ali Farid, convener of BNP upazila unit.

Later, his body will be taken to his village home in the upazila for burial, he added.

JCD units of all upazilas, colleges and municipalities will hold a programme later in the day to protest the death of Nayan, said Brahmanbaria district JCD convener Fozayel Chowdhury.

A case will be filed with the local court after finding out the name of the policeman responsible for Nayan's death.
