Five BNP lawmakers’ seats now vacant: speaker

Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury on Sunday said that the parliamentary seats of five lawmakers of the main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party who submitted their letters of resignation from the parliament had now become vacant.

She made the comment while speaking to journalists at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban after submitting resignation letters by five BNP lawmakers.

The speaker said that she received resignation letters of seven BNP lawmakers and five of them submitted their letters in person.

Of the remaining two, she said, one was sick and the other was now staying abroad.

‘The parliamentary seats of the five lawmakers who came in person have become vacant. We will verify signatures of two other letters to know whether they themselves sent the letters. The parliament secretariat will verify it,’ she said.

The five BNP lawmakers who submitted resignation letters in person are Rumeen Farhana of reserved seat for women, Golam Mohammad Sirajul Islam of Bogura-6, Md Aminul Islam of Chapainawabganj-2, Md Mosharraf Hossain of Bogura-4, and Zahidur Rahman of Thakurgaon-3.

Md Harunur Rashid of Chapainawabganj-3 is now staying abroad and Abdus Sattar of Brahmanbaria-2 is sick now and they could not came to the parliament to submit their resignation letters in person.

The speaker said that lawmaker Harunur Rashid sent his resignation letter through email where his signature was given by scanning his signature and added that the letter would not be accepted.

That is why, she said, lawmaker Harunur Rashid would have to submit his letter again if he wished to resign.

The speaker said that the JS secretariat would publish circular announcing the seats vacant after completing all the needed procedures.

The BNP lawmakers submitted letters of resignation from the parliament to the speaker at the parliament secretariat on Sunday, a day after announcement or their resignation at the party’s divisional rally in Dhaka on Saturday.
