High Court turns down Jahangir's writ to get back his candidacy

The High Court (HC) today upheld the decision of the Election Commission to cancel the candidacy of suspended Gazipur mayor Zahangir Alam, who had submitted nomination papers to contest the upcoming Gazipur City Corporation election.

The HC bench of Farah Mahbub and Muhammad Mahbub Ul Islam summarily rejected the writ petition filed by Zahangir challenging legality of the EC's decision.

The HC, in the order, said Zahangir was a loan defaulter at the time of submission of his nomination paper.

Zahangir was present at the court and told reporters that he would file an appeal with the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court challenging the HC order.

He filed the writ petition with the High Court yesterday seeking the court's order to reinstate his candidacy.

On Thursday, Dhaka Divisional Commissioner Sabirul Islam rejected Zahangir's appeal for reinstatement of his candidacy.
