AL announces protest rallies across Bangladesh for Sunday

The ruling Awami League on Saturday announced demonstrations and protest rallies across Bangladesh, including the capital, on Sunday protesting against arson.

At a press conference at the AL central office on Bangabandhu Avenue in Dhaka, party general secretary Obaidul Quader announced the programme accusing the main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party of arson.

He said that the AL units in all thanas, upazials, districts and cities along with the associate bodies would hold protest rallies from 10:00am to 5:00pm.

‘Everyone says that we announce programmes to counter their [BNP] programmes. We will not follow BNP in announcing our programmes. On Friday, we held programme within a kilometre, but no untoward incident was reported. We don’t hold meetings to clash with anyone. We stayed in the streets to ensure the safety of people’s life and property and we will do so,’ he said.

Announcing the programme, Quader said that the BNP started arson attack again.

‘They [BNP] set fire to four buses at Matuail. They attacked a police van and ransacked it. Cars, motorcycles were vandalised. Seven buses were attacked and set on fire in the capital,’ Quader said.

‘I want to say clearly that BNP’s arson has started again. Awami League leaders and activists cannot remain silent. We will do our duty,’ he added.
