Law enforcers unrestrained in supressing opposition: BNP

The main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party alleged on Sunday that law enforcement agencies became unrestrained in suppressing the opposition parties.

‘The government is crushing the democratic rights of opposition parties and dissenting voices. They adopted a brutal repression policy. Law enforcement agencies are now rampant in suppressing the opposition,’ BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said in a statement.

He issued the statement protesting at the arrest of Bhashani Anusari Parishad joint convener Abu Yusuf Salim.

Fakhrul said that after suppressing democracy, the current ‘authoritarian illegal’ government had resorted to the oppression of opposition parties and dissenting people in order to plunge the country into the darkness of one-party misrule.

The ‘illegal’ arrest of Abu Yusuf from the sit-in programme on July 29 as part of the ongoing anti-government simultaneous movement was a continuation of that oppression, he said.

Abu Yusuf is currently very ill in prison but denied proper medical treatment, the statement added.
Fakhrul said that humanity and civilization signs were erased continuously because democracy had become pointless.

‘The only purpose of maintaining fear and apprehension in the country is to ensure no one dares protest against the illegal and arbitrary rule of the fascist Awami government,’ Fakhrul said in the statement.

However, despite years of oppression and persecution, the people have started taking to the streets to overthrow the current illegal ruling group and get rid of the terrible misrule, and the people will win, he said.

BNP and other opposition parties held sit-in programmes at Dhaka city entry points on July 29, demanding the resignation of prime minister Sheikh Hasina.
