Innocent people being picked up under 'militant' label: Mirza Alamgir

Innocent people are being labelled as militants and picked up in the hills, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said today.

"This is needed for them [government]. Because they want to show that there are militants in Bangladesh. And to suppress the militants, they need to stay in power. This is their main goal. They want to show it to Western countries and India," Fakhrul said.

He made the remarks during the eighth memorial event organised for former Jatiya Party Chairman Kazi Zafar Ahmed, another faction of the Jatiya Party.

"We understand that it is, in fact, the government itself that holds militant tendencies. The Awami League and the government engage in activities resembling militancy. They are responsible for the unjust killing of ordinary citizens and the denial of their rights, all while wrongfully accusing them of being militants," he asserted.

Fakhrul further denounced the government's treatment of the six Chhatra Dal leaders arrested over the weekend, asserting that they were framed in a fabricated case.

He accused the government of attempting to deceive the public and of spreading false information. "The people of the country are now well aware of their actions. They can no longer deceive them to remain in power."

He also criticised Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's statement referring to the Zia family as a family of killers.
