BNP demands resignation of health minister, Dhaka city mayors

The main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party on Sunday demanded immediate resignation of the health minister and mayors of two city corporations in Dhaka for the failures of the health ministry and the city corporations to check dengue situation.

The party secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir made the demand in a press conference on the country’s dengue situation at its central office at Naya Paltan in Dhaka.

He alleged that the dengue situation had taken a serious turn due to the government’s total corruption in the health sector.

‘The government has failed miserably to prevent dengue due to their incompetence and corruption. The Dhaka North City Corporation and the Dhaka South City Corporations are now completely silent over the issue. Bangladesh is shivering with dengue fever,’ he alleged.

The BNP leader said that the number of dengue deaths and cases had broken all the previous records and dengue was becoming headlines in the media every day.

‘On an average, around 20 people are dying every day,’ he said.

He alleged that the number of dengue infected people and deaths were much more higher than the data we get from the government every day.

Mentioning that dengue was first detected in 2000 and it took devastating turn in 2018, he said that children were more affected by dengue this year and the queue of the bodies were increasing. ‘But the government doesn’t care, the government doesn’t take initiative. ‘

The BNP leader urged the party leaders and activists to come forward to act effectively to prevent dengue.

BNP chairperson’s advisory council member Farhad Halim Donar, BNP health affairs secretary Rafiqul Islam, assistant health affairs secretary Rafiqul Islam Bachchu, Parvez Reza Kakon, Doctors’ Association of Bangladesh president Harun Al Rashid, secretary general Abdus Salam, among others, were present at the press conference.
