Cumilla AL factional clash leaves one dead, 10 injured

A man was killed and 10 others were injured in a clash between two factions of the ruling Awami League in village Chalibhanga under Meghna upazila in Cumilla district on Monday.

The deceased is Nizam Sarkar, a leader of Chalibhanga union unit of Swechchhasebak League.

The district additional superintendent of police (crime) Khandaker Ashfaquzzaman said that there was a longstanding rivalry between local Awami League leader Humayun chairman and another AL faction led by Md Qayum over establishing supremacy in the area.

As a sequel to the previous enmity, supporters of the two groups, armed with local weapons, attacked each other in the morning, leaving at least 11 people injured.

The injured were admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where Nizam Sarkar, brother of Humayun chairman, died.

Preparation is underway to file a case in this regard, said the additional SP.
