AL says BNP plotting to foil polls

The ruling Awami League on Monday accused the main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party of being engaged in a deep conspiracy to foil the forthcoming 12th parliamentary polls in January.

‘BNP is engaged in a deep conspiracy to foil the election and pollute the electoral environment,’ AL general secretary Obaidul Quader said in a statement.

‘They [BNP] want to make the election and electoral process questionable, going against the democratic process like they did in the past,’ he said.

Quader, also the road, transports and bridges minister, said that they [BNP] wanted to spoil the country’s political stability and ongoing development activities.

Speaking about the election in 2014, he alleged that the BNP had killed over 3,000 people across the country through arson attacks to foil the polls.

He also claimed that BNP had set fire to 500 polling centres, schools, colleges, and public and private organisations, killed judges and lawyers by bombing courtrooms, threw up rail links, felled several thousand trees, and dug roads in the name of resisting the election.

Quader said that the 12th parliamentary elections would be held on time, following the constitution.

‘No evil forces could resist the election. The country’s people are united to resist any unconstitutional and unlawful conspiracy to foil the election,’ he said.

Quader added that the Awami League was committed to building a ‘Smart Bangladesh’ while upholding the country’s ongoing development.
