BNP SG sent to jail day after their grand rally attacked by AL, police

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir was sent to jail on Sunday night a day after the party's grand rally was called off amid attacks from supporters of the ruling Awami League and police.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Rashidul Alam passed the order around 9:55pm after rejecting his bail prayer.

Police produced Fakhrul before the Dhaka court appealing to it to confine him in jail until the investigation is completed.

Earlier, Fakhrul was shown arrested around 8:30pm, nine hours after his detention by law enforcement forces, in a case filed reportedly on charges of attack on chief justice’s residence and vandalising there.

Detective Branch of police picked up Fakhrul from his Gulshan residence in Dhaka around 9:25am today.

On Saturday afternoon, police fired tear gas, sound grenades, and rubber bullets to break up a massive gathering of BNP supporters in Dhaka's Nayapaltan. The clash spread around the protest site, as police fired tear gas and rubber shotgun rounds, while protesters retaliated by throwing stones and bricks.

The protesters were demanding that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina step down to allow for a free and fair election under a neutral government.

Protesters chanted slogans such as, "Vote thief, vote thief, Sheikh Hasina vote thief" during the demonstration in front of the BNP headquarters. In addition to the immediate resignation of the Hasina government, the opposition activists demanded the release of Khaleda Zia and the establishment of the people's right to vote.

BNP leaders alleged that hundreds of their activists got injured by the brutal attacks by the police and the Awami League supporters.
