Ganatantra Mancha demands end to human rights violation

Leaders of the Ganatantra Mancha, a combine of six political parties, on Sunday at a protest rally in Dhaka said that the Awami League government was violating human rights to stop movements of the opposition political parties.

The combine organised the rally in front of the National Human Rights Commission office at Karwan Bazar to mark International Human Rights Day.

Ganosamhati Andolan chief coordinator Zonayed Saki chaired the rally.

At the rally, Nagarik Oikya president Mahmudur Rahman Manna said that the Awami League government was arresting leaders and activists of the opposition parties to stop movements against the government.

The government is going to hold a unilateral general election on January 7 but the people will not participate in it, Manna said.

Revolutionary Workers Party general secretary Saiful Huq said that the unilateral general election would bring new danger to the country and would increase sufferings of the people and the Awami League government would be responsible for that.

Ganosamhati Andolan chief coordinator Zonayed Saki called on the government to refrain from holding the unilateral general election and resign from power immediately.

The next general election must be held under a neutral interim government in a free, fair and credible manner, Saki said.

Bhashani Onusari Parishad convener Sheikh Rafiqul Islam Bablu said that the people of the country were waiting to see an end to misrule of the Awami League government.

Rastra Sanskar Andolan chief coordinator Hasnat Quayium said that they would continue their movements until restoration of the voting rights of the people.

Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal-JSD general secretary Shahid Uddin Mahmod Shapon said that the people of the country would not accept any farcical general elections like in 2014 and 2018.

In a press release, the Ganatantra Mancha also announced a countrywide 48-hour road, rail and riverway blockade programme on December 12 and 13 as an identical programme with the main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party-led alliance.

Nagarik Oikya general secretary Shahidullah Kaiysar, Bhashani Onusari Parishad member secretary Habibur Rahman Reezu, Ganosamhati central leader Monir Uddin Pappu and others spoke at the rally.

The rally was followed by a protest procession that paraded different city roads.
