Govt bans political gatherings across Bangladesh from Dec 18

The home affairs ministry, following Election Commission's instructions, has ordered not to hold any kind of rallies except election campaigns from December 18, ahead of Bangladesh's next general election.

The Ministry of Home Affairs issued a notification in this regard on Thursday.

According to the notification, ‘As the candidates will start their election campaigning from December 18, the ministry ordered all to refrain from holding meetings, rallies or any types of political programme that may hinder the election environment or discourage the voters from voting.’

On Tuesday, deputy secretary of the EC Md Atiar Rahman issued a letter to the home ministry in this regard, which was sent to the senior secretary of the Public Security Division of the ministry.

Besides, on the occasion of the 12th national elections, the ministry requested to call the national emergency service 999 for any assistance related to the election.

‘Any election related information, complaints received through national emergency service 999 will be reported to the concerned returning officers and action will be taken,’ it said.
