Ganatantra Mancha urges people to take to streets rejecting polls

Leaders of Ganatantra Mancha on Thursday at a rally in Dhaka called on the country’s people to take to the streets rejecting the one-sided parliamentary elections scheduled on January 7.

Ganatantra Mancha organised the rally in front of the National Press Club as part of its countrywide mass contact programme demanding rejection of the polls and resignation of ruling Awami League government where Ganosamhati Andolan chief coordinator Zonayed Saki chaired.

Zonayed Saki said that the Awami League was going to hold farcical general election while most of the opposition political parties were rejecting it.

He called on the people to take the streets and boycott the election slated for January 7.

The government would not be able to hold this kind of farcical poll if the people took to the streets and waged mass movements against them, he added.

Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal-JSD general secretary Shahid Uddin Mahmod Shapon said that the government would not be able to stop the movements of the opposition parties.

Nagarik Oikya general secretary Shahidullah Kaysar, Bhashani Onusari Parishad general secretary Habibur Rahman Reezu, Revolutionary Workers Party central leader Akbar Khan, Rastra Sanskar Andolan central leader Imran Emon, among others, spoke at the rally.

The rally was followed by a protest procession that paraded different roads of Matijheel.

Meanwhile, Ganatantra Mancha will hold a rally and protest procession in front of the National Museum at 3:00pm on Friday as part of their mass contact programme on the second day.
