Programme to oust AL govt to come again: BNP

The main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party said on Saturday that it would come to the streets with a fresh programme to oust the ruling Awami League from power.

‘The programme to bring down the government will come, and everything will be taken into account. By fighting, the one-party rule of Bangladesh will be ended and the caretaker government system will be brought back,’ BNP chairperson’s advisor Zainul Abdin Farroque said at a human chain.

Swadhinata Odhikar Andolon, a civil rights group, organised the human chain programme in front of the National Press Club, protesting the ongoing misrule that they said was established by the Awami League.

‘The government today neglects BNP. But the ground under their feet is moving away. We are honest, and we are on the path of justice. That’s why our leader [BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia] doesn’t even have a piece of land abroad,’ he added.

Farroque commented that dictators use state apparatus to stay in power.

‘Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, we apologise to you. Even if the people are with us, we cannot do anything just for this state apparatus,’ he said.

He said that if this government believed in democracy, it would not have elected 154 representatives as members of parliament uncontested in 2014 and would not have completed the voting on the night before the voting day in 2018.

The election commissioner was asleep during the dummy election that the commission organised, spending Tk 2000 crore this time in 2024, he said.

‘They [AL leaders] talk about the control of commodity prices on the one hand and create syndicates on the other hand. They built houses in Canada with the money that came from syndicates. But the people of Bangladesh cannot buy and eat an egg; they cannot buy and eat meat,’ he said.
