Democracy defeated in Jan 7 polls: speakers

Politicians, academics and writers on Saturday at a discussion meeting in Dhaka said that no political party won the one-sided general election, held on January 7, but democracy was defeated through the poll.

Rastrachinta organised the discussion meeting titled ‘general election held on January 7, its impacts’ at the National Press Club where central leader of the organisation Al Razi chaired.

Writer Rakhal Raha said that the Awami League government had held a one-sided general election on January 7, by which they had come in power again.

But democracy was defeated through the poll as most the voters were rejected it.

Writer Mahbub Morshed said that the opposition parties should continue their movements against the Awami League government to oust them from power.

Chittagong University teacher Moshreka Aditi Huq said that Awami League had seized voting rights of the people in the country.

There was no alternative of holding movements for restoration of democratic rights of the people, she said.

Organising secretary of Rastra Sanskar Andolan Imran Emon said that Ganatantra Mancha and the opposition political parties would continue their movements until the restoration of the voting rights of the people.

Academics Saimum Reza Pias, Nasir Uddin Ahmed, journalist Selim Khan, politicians Hasibuddin Hossain, Faridul Haque and others spoke at the discussion meeting.
