Bandarban incident unmasks poor security system: BNP

The main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party on Sunday said that recent incidents in hill district Bandarban revealed the fragility of the country’s security system.

BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir came up with the remark at an Eid gift distribution ceremony at the party chairperson’s Gulshan office to the leaders and activists affected by the government and law enforcement agencies since October 28 last year.

‘The border of Bangladesh is affected today. But the government could not solve this problem,’ he said, adding that the government cannot say exactly who is attacking and looting in Bandarban.

When the truth behind an incident fails to emerge, the government finds the militant issue, he said.

‘The Awami League has created anarchy all over the country after coming to power. The rulers have put their paws on educational institutions, including Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology. There is no university where there is no anarchy of the Chhatra League,’ he said.

The BNP leader also said that this government failed in all aspects in managing the state.

‘All sectors, including education and health, have been destroyed with a view to staying in power. They [AL] have created a terrible situation across the country,’ he added.

‘When something can’t be done, blame has to be put on militants... This incident has proved that Bangladesh’s security system is very fragile,’ he said.

Fakhrul also said that suffering should be converted into strength and then everyone should unite and ensure the downfall of the government.

He expressed hope that democracy would be established in the country.

He criticised the government stating that the government could not solve the water problem with India and it could not stop border killings either.

He also said that the government could not even provide employment to people.

In the past week, ethnic armed group the Kuki-Chin National Front allegedly robbed three branches of two state-run banks and carried out an attack on a police station.
