The United Nations on Friday urged Bangladesh authorities to follow all due process in the trial of former Prime Minsiter and BNP chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia.

“We’ve repeatedly made clear our call that all due process be followed, and we will continue to do so as this continues,” said Farhan Haq, Deputy Spokesperson to the UN Secretary-General, at the noon briefing held at UN headquarter in New York.

The Spokesman said this in reply to question over BNP chief Khaleda Zia’s imprisonment and denying her realease by the ruling authority after securing bail in the cases.

At the briefing UN Correspondent M Mushfiqul Fazal asked, “I'm wondering BNP (Bangladesh National Party) Chairperson and first woman Prime Minister of Bangladesh, Begum Khaleda Zia, has completed one year in prison and no sign of release, so… soon despite obtaining bail in all cases. As you know, the justices obstructed by the ruling authority, the chief justice forced to leave the country. So, is Secretary‑General aware of this? Begum Zia was the first woman Prime Minister. She was the first Prime Minister who allowed first time Rohingya… hundreds and thousands of Rohingya in Bangladesh she did, women empowerment and girls’ education free in Bangladesh.”

In response the Deputy Spokesperson said, “Regarding that, you’re aware that, in this case, we’ve repeatedly made clear our call that all due process be followed, and we will continue to do so as this continues.”
