The United States has said that they are monitoring reports about former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia’s deteriorating health.

“We have encouraged the Bangladeshi Government to ensure a fair and transparent legal process for Khaleda Zia,” said US State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller said on Thursday while replying to a query on Khaleda Zia’s deteriorating health and government’s denial to send her abroad for advance treatment.

In the briefing, State Department correspondent M Mushfiqul Fazal raised the question expressing concern about the deteriorating health condition of BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia, who is now receiving treatment at a hospital in Dhaka.

Responding to another question about the government’s crackdown on opposition BNP centring the grand rally scheduled to be held on October 28, demanding the resignation of the government and restoration of caretaker government, the State Department spokesperson said, “Our comment is, as it has been, that we believe the upcoming elections need to be free, fair, and peaceful.”
