The United Nations has said that they do not want to see any harassment or arbitrary arrest or violence in Bangladesh while the country’s general election is nearing.

Stéphane Dujarric, spokesperson for the UN secretary-general, made the comment while responding to a question during the daily press briefing by his office on Wednesday.

Referring to a statement issued by the Human Rights Watch that urged Bangladesh’s international partners to insist that elections cannot be considered fair when the opposition was targeted, harassed and behind the bars, journalist M Mushfiqul Fazal asked whether the UN secretary-general would take member state Bangladesh’s situation seriously.

The questioner also mentioned at least three opposition activists were ‘killed in the police gunfire’ on Tuesday.

‘I think on our viewpoint on Bangladesh and the need for free and fair election, I think we’ve spoken out very clearly.’ Stéphane Dujarric also said in his answer.
