UN calls for inclusive and credible polls in Bangladesh

The United Nations wants to see a peaceful, inclusive and credible national election in Bangladesh, said the UN Secretary-General’s spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric on Monday.

He said they called on all stakeholders, including the government and political parties to do whatever they can, to promote a peaceful, inclusive and credible election.

The spokesperson made the remarks at a briefing at UN headquarters while responding to a question regarding the lopsided election schedule announced in Bangladesh and the ongoing political crisis which is continuing in the country.

Election Commission on November 15 announced the schedule for the 12th parliamentary elections, fixing January 7 as the voting day amid protests from major opposition parties, including the main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party, pressing for resignation of the ruling Awami League and holding the election under a non-party caretaker government.
