The United Nations has called on all parties in Bangladesh to ensure that people are able to exercise their voting rights and opinion freely without any harassment.

The UN Secretary-General’s spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric made the remark at a briefing at UN headquarters on Wednesday while his attention was drawn about the government’s attempts to hold a one sided election and ongoing crackdown on opposition members.

In the briefing, the spokesperson said the UN will not send observers in the upcoming national elections.

Mentioning that the UN is aware of the reports of Human Rights Watch and other organizations on concern about another unfair election, Dujarric said, “We, again, call on all parties involved to ensure that people are able to exercise their voting rights and opinion freely, free of any harassment.”
