The secretary general of the United Nations (UN), António Guterres, has urged all parties in Bangladesh to reject all forms of violence and to ensure that everyone’s human rights and everyone’s access to the rule of law are fully respected.

Stéphane Dujarric, spokesperson for the UN secretary general, made the remark while replying to a query on Bangladesh’s situation from this correspondent at a briefing at UN Headquarters on Tuesday.

Mentioning the 12th national election as a one-sided dummy election marred by polls-rigging, intimidation and boycott by all major political parties, UN correspondent Mushfiqul Fazal asked whether the UN secretary general will stand beside the victims, oppressed and disenfranchised people of Bangladesh who faced ruthless crackdown by the regime in the name of so-called election.

In reply, Dujarric said the UN secretary general very publicly calls on all parties to reject all forms of violence and to ensure that everyone’s human rights and everyone’s access to the rule of law are fully respected which is essential for the consolidation of democracy and economic prosperity in Bangladesh.

He further said, the UN secretary general is, of course, concerned about reports of the violence that they have seen.
