22 Covid-19 patients die due to interrupted oxygen supply at Indian hospital

At least 22 Covid-19 patients died today due to interrupted oxygen supply at a hospital in Nashik district of the Indian state of Maharashtra, the worst-hit region in the country, amidst an unprecedented surge in daily cases of coronavirus.

An oxygen tanker leaked while the tankers were being filled at Dr Zakir Hussain Hospital in Nashik district today. At least 22 patients have died due to low oxygen supply following leakage, said District Collector Suraj Mandhare.

He told the media the patients were on ventilators as well as on oxygen supply, which got interrupted after the leakage in the oxygen supply tank, our New Delhi correspondent reports.

Maharashtra Health Minister Rajesh Tope said the patients were being treated at a hospital run by the Nashik Municipal Corporation for Covid-19 patients.

A video of oxygen purportedly leaking from the storage plant went viral on the social media.

Some relatives of the deceased Covid-19 patients have alleged that the "lowered supply of oxygen" claimed the lives of their kin.

Several states of India are facing a shortage of medical oxygen.
