SI Akbar person of interest, barred from leaving country

The Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) has barred the suspended Sub-Inspector (SI) Akbar Bhuiyan, accused of torturing and killing Rayhan Ahmed, from leaving the country.

PBI Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Banaj Kumar Majumder confirmed the matter at a press briefing on Thursday.

Banaj Kumar said that preliminary investigations indicate that apprehension of SI Akbar, who has reportedly gone missing, is crucial to making progress in the case filed over the death of Rayhan Ahmed, where the suspended SI is the prime accused.

He said PBI has provided immigration with details of SI Akbar and has instructed them to not let him leave the country, as part of their effort to catch him as soon as possible.

He said the PBI, on Thursday, appealed for Rayhan’s body to be exhumed in order for it to undergo a second post-mortem.

The DIG added that the Sylhet Medical College authority has been urged to form a board to oversee the autopsy.

When asked if Rayhan was murdered over Tk10,000, the PBI chief responded that the investigation over the case, which had only just begun, will look into all possibilities.

The entire force cannot be held responsible for the actions of a few individuals, he added.

On Sunday, the 34-year-old Rayhan Ahmed died in police custody following torture, his family alleged.

Four police officers, including SI Akbar Bhuiyan, were suspended and three others withdrawn from duty in Sylhet following the incident.

On Tuesday, the Bandarbazar police outpost sub-inspector went missing.
