Ex-MP Awal, two others put on remand in Pallabi murder case

A metropolitan magistrate court in Dhaka on Friday put former lawmaker MA Awal and two other people on a four-day remand in police custody for interrogation in a case filed over the killing of a man in Pallabi area in Dhaka.

Two other accused are Zahirul Islam Babu and Nur Mohammad Hasan.

Metropolitan magistrate Nivana Khair Jesi passed the order after the detective branch of police produced them before the court seeking the court’s permission to take them in their custody for 10 days, said the court’s general recording officer Mohammad Selim Reza.

In the remand prayer, DB officials said Awal was the mastermind in the killing and the murder was committed as per his direction.

The other accused executed the mission, the bail prayer said.

Awal was elected lawmaker from Lakshmipur-1 constituency with Bangladesh Tarikat Federation ticket. Later he left the part and formed his own party, Islami Democratic Party, and became its chairman.

Awal had an enmity with the victim Shahin Uddin, 33, of Pallabi area over a piece of land for a long time. Since Awal failed to grab the land of the victim, he hired goons to kill Sahin Uddin, police said.

On the other hand, Awal’s defence lawyer submitted separate petitions seeking the trio’s bail and cancellation of the remand prayer on grounds that his clients were implicated in the case as a part of a conspiracy to harass them.

Earlier, RAB arrested four people, including the former lawmaker MA Awal, in the case filed for hacking Sahin to death on May 16 in the capital's Pallabi area.

Sahin, 33, was hacked to death in front of his seven-year-old child in broad daylight. The three other arrested are Hassan, Jahurul Islam Babu, and Sumon Bepari.
