Hashem Foods owner, five others land in jail

A Narayanganj court on Wednesday sent six accused, including Hashem Foods factory owner Abul Hashem, after a four-day police custody in a case filed over a factory fire in Narayanganj that killed 52 people.

However, two more accused in the case were released on bail by the court.

Narayanganj senior judicial magistrate Fahmida Khatun passed the order as the police produced the eight accused before the court after the custody, said Narayanganj court inspector Asaduzzaman.

The six accused who were sent to jail are factory owner Abul Hashem, his two sons—Hasib Bin Hashem and Tareq Ibrahim, Sajeeb Group chief operating officer Shahan Shah Azad, Hashem Foods deputy general manager Mamunur Rashid, and the factory’s administrative officer Salahuddin.

Hashem’s two other sons— Tawsif Ibrahim and Tanjim Ibrahim who are directors of Hashem Foods factory— were released on bails after their lawyer’s petition.

On July 8, a total of 52 workers of a juice factory of Hashem Foods Ltd at Rupganj in Narayanganj died in a fire incident.
