BSF jawan arrested for raping Bangladeshi woman in custody

A sub-inspector of the Indian Border Security Force has been arrested by the police on the charge of raping a Bangladeshi woman trader in custody, Indian media reported on Friday.

The suspect, Rameswar Kayal, was remanded in police custody for two days after he was produced in Bangaon Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Court on Thursday.

NDTV from Bangaon in the Indian state of West Bengal reported that the BSF personnel was arrested for his alleged involvement in raping the Bangladeshi woman on the pretext of interrogating her inside a camp of the paramilitary force in North 24 Parganas district.

The BSF arrested the victim while she was illegally crossing into India, the Indian police said on Friday.

According to a complaint lodged by the survivor at Gaighata police station, the incident took place on the night of July 27.

After it came to light, the NDTV reported that the BSF itself handed over its personnel to the local police and placed him under suspension.

The survivor and another woman, both hailing from Bangladesh’s Gopalganj, the report added.

As per the survivor’s police complaint, the two women were arrested by 158th battalion personnel of the BSF while they were illegally entering India through the Jhaudanga border.

The BSF man was charged under Section 376 of the Indian Penal Code.

The woman’s statement was also recorded by a judicial magistrate under Section 164 of the CrPC, and medical tests were conducted on her.
