Bangladesh logs 992 dengue cases in 7 days

A total of 992 dengue patients were detected this week across the country while 170 new dengue patients were detected in the 24-hour period till 8:00am on Friday amid the worsening coronavirus situation.

The country reported 104 dengue cases on July 24, 105 cases on July 25, 123 cases on July 26, 143 cases on July 27 and 153 cases on July 28, 194 cases on July 29 besides 170 new cases on Friday, showed DGHS data.

With these, the number of total dengue patients rose to 2462 since January this year.

The number of dengue patients has been increasing since the beginning of July due to the monsoon rain.

Among the total cases detected since January, 2,090 were diagnosed in the past 30 days of July, said the Health Emergency Operation Centre and Control Room of the Directorate General of Health Services on Friday.

Among the 170 new dengue cases reported on Friday, only six were outside the capital city of Dhaka. The daily number of cases in the country crossed the 100 mark on July 24.

The Dhaka North City Corporation has been conducting a combing operation to destroy the breeding grounds of Aedes mosquitoes in the city since July 27, which is scheduled to run till August 7.

DNCC Mayor Atiqul Islam on Friday said that all people must clean their own house at 10:10am every Saturday.

He said that he would share photos of his own effort in cleaning his house and the adjacent places on his verified Facebook page on Saturday.

He also said that through the 44 health centres, the DNCC is providing dengue tests facility free of cost.

Abu Jamil Faisel, a public health expert and government advisor on Covid-19 for Sylhet division told New Age on Friday that the Covid and dengue situation is worsening gradually and as a result, it would be tough for the country’s health sector to tackle the situation.

‘People from all walks of life have to work together to get address the dengue crisis. There is no alternative to creating awareness among the masses,’ he added.

According to the daily DGHS report, 709 dengue patients are currently undergoing treatment at different government and private hospitals.

Of the patients, 679 are taking treatment at 41 public and private hospitals in Dhaka and the rest at hospitals in other divisions.

A total of 1,749 people have recovered from dengue since January, said the report.

On Friday, the country recorded 212 more Covid deaths and an additional 13, 862 cases in the 24-hour cycle ending on Friday morning, according to the DGHS release.

Meanwhile, mobile courts of the Dhaka South City Corporation on Friday realised Tk 50 thousand in fines from people for their negligence in destroying Aedes mosquito breeding sites, besides running a campaign to create awareness through public address systems by city corporation staff and imams of different mosques.

The Dhaka south city authorities also urged the imams of different mosques to make announcements through their public address system to create awareness among people to destroy larvae in stagnant water.

According to the National Malaria Elimination and Aedes Transmitted Diseases Control Programme, the authorities have identified some specific areas with relatively high dengue infections in both the Dhaka North and South City Corporations this year.

The areas under the South City Corporation include Kakrail, Moghbazar, Siddheshwari, Shantinagar, Segunbagicha, Paltan, Khilgaon, Mugdha and Basabo while the areas in the north city, include Rampura, cantonment areas, Mohakhali, Mirpur, Bashundhara residential area, Badda and Mohammadpur.

The health directorate reported 1,193 dengue cases and three dengue deaths in 2020.

In 2019, some 1,01,350 dengue patients were hospitalised across the country with at least 276 of them dying of the fever.

In 2018, at least 10,148 people have diagnosed with the viral fever and 26 of them died of the disease.
