Dhaka streets continue to see heavy traffic

The government allowed all public transport to operate for one day to facilitate the return of workers and officials of the export-oriented factories.

However, people are still entering Dhaka in various ways even though the public transport was suspended again on Monday.

Dhaka's entrances are crowded with freight transport as well as cars, microbuses and motorcycles. Meanwhile, police have set up checkpoints to verify people’s reason for entering the capital.

At the Gabtoli checkpoint, most of the people said they worked at garment factories or cited medical reasons to enter the capital.

The police are allowing them to enter the capital subject to showing the necessary documents and identity cards. They are also taking various measures including fines for those who did not have a valid reason.

“The traffic is heavy today (Monday). More people are moving on the streets as garment factories have reopened,” said Sergeant Asadur Rahman.

“We are monitoring those who came out on the streets without any reason and taking action against them."
