RAB arrests two associates of Helena Jahangir

Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has arrested two associates of Helena Jahangir, the recently expelled Awami League leader who was recently arrested and accused in five cases.

The duo – identified as Hajera Khatun and Sanaullah Nuri – were arrested from Dhaka’s Gabtoli area on Monday night, according to Commander Khandaker Al Moin, the director of RAB’s Legal and Media Wing.

He told Bangla Tribune on Tuesday that Hajera and Nuri were close associates of businessperson-turned-politician Helena, who was arrested on charges of attempting to defame important state institutions and individuals by spreading lies, propaganda, and misleading information using digital platforms.

RAB will brief the reporters on the arrests at its media centre in the capital's Karwan Bazar later in the day.

According to police sources, Hajera was the general manager of Helena’s illegal Joyjatra IPTV and Sanaullah Noori was its coordinator.

Law enforcers arrested Helena during a raid at her Gulshan residence on the night of July 29.

During the raid, RAB seized a huge quantity of liquor, casino equipment, walkie-talkies, and knives from her home. After her arrest, RAB also raided the office of Joyjatra IPTV and sealed it off.

Five cases were later filed against her under the Liquor and Narcotics Control Act, Wildlife Protection Act, Special Powers Act, Digital Security Act, and Telecommunications Act.

Helena is a director of the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industries (FBCCI) and the chairperson of Joyjatra IPTV.

On July 25, she lost her membership of the Awami League subcommittee on women affairs for her involvement with 'Bangladesh Awami Chakrijibi League,' an organization with no affiliation with the ruling party.

She was also removed from the advisor post of the ruling party’s Comilla district unit following all the allegations surrounding her.
