BCL locks Asif Nazrul's office over FB post

Enraged by a Facebook post by Dhaka University teacher Professor Dr Asif Nazrul, members of the ruling party’s student wing Bangladesh Chhatra League on Wednesday locked his office at the university’s law department.

Prof Asif Nazrul was not present when the Chhatra League activists went to his office after holding a program on the campus to mark the series bomb blasts day.

The law professor in a Facebook post on August 16 wrote that if elections were fair, Bangladesh would witness a situation similar to the chaotic scenes at Kabul airport a couple of days back, with thousands of people trying to escape after the Taliban took power.

The Chhatra League activists pasted posters on the wall outside the room and painted them to demand the professor’s trial for treason, terming him an agent of Jamaat-Shibir and the Pakistani spy agency ISI. They accused him of supporting militancy and the Taliban.

When contacted, Proctor AKM Golam Rabbani said he had heard about the incident and was looking into the matter.

DU unit Chhatra League President Saddam Hossain claimed that general students locked Asif Nazrul’s office following his “seditious” statement in favor of militancy.

“We hope that he will withdraw his remarks immediately and apologize to the nation,” Saddam said.

Meanwhile, Bangladesh Muktijuddha Mancha burned the effigy of Dr Asif Nazrul at Raju Bhaskarja on the campus and demanded his expulsion from the university for seditious activities.
