Daily deaths 4-month low in Bangladesh

The Directorate General of Health Services recorded 21 new deaths in the 24-hour period till 8:00am Sunday, the lowest daily figure in over four months.

On May 26, the daily death toll was 17, according to DGHS data.

The health agency recorded 980 fresh Covid cases in the reporting period.

The test positivity rate was 4.41 per cent as 22,221 samples were tested across Bangladesh in the period.

The daily Covid deaths rose rapidly in June and were very high in July, while the highest daily Covid deaths of 264 were recorded on two days in August in a gap of five days, with the first record seen on August 5.

Covid cases, however, steadily spiked after mid-May, immediately after the presence of the Delta variant of the coronavirus had been confirmed in the country.

The highest 16,230 daily Covid cases were logged on July 28, during the peak of the outbreak caused by the Delta variant.

The daily Covid cases steadily fell in August and the fall continued through September with epidemiologists saying that Bangladesh has passed through the latest wave of the outbreak since the detection of the first cases in the country on March 8, 2020.

With the latest figures, the overall Covid death toll has so far reached 27,414 and the total number of cases 15,51,351 in the country.

Epidemiologists and public health experts have, however, warned that despite the decline in the case positivity rate and deaths, another Covid wave might take place if the health rules are not obeyed.

The latest 21 daily deaths occurred in 14 districts with the highest eight deaths reported by Dhaka.

Fourteen of the fresh dead were women and the rest seven men.

Government hospitals accounted for 17 deaths while four others died at private facilities, according to the DGHS report.

Division-wise, Dhaka reported the highest 10 deaths followed by Chattogram with four deaths, Sylhet three deaths, Rajshahi two deaths and Khulna and Mymensingh one death each.

Barishal and Rangpur divisions reported no deaths.

Ten of the fresh dead were aged above 60 years, seven between 51 years and 60 years, two between 41 years and 50 years, one between 31 years and 40 years and one between 11 years and 20 years, according to the daily DGHS Covid update.
