Student who fell into Chittagong sewage drain found dead

A firefighter's diving team has recovered the body of a missing university student who fell into a drain in Agrabad of Chittagong city around 10pm on Monday.

The body was recovered after a four-and-a half-hour long rescue operation in the Mazar Gate area of Agrabad around 3:15am on Tuesday.

The deceased is Sheherin Mahmud Sadia, 19, from Barapol area in Chittagong city. She was a first year student of Department of Computer Engineering at International Islamic University.

Confirming the matter, Chittagong Fire Service Deputy Director Newton Das said: “The drain was flooded and full of dirt. It took four-and-a half-hour for our divers to recover the body. The body has been handed over to the family.”

The deceased’s cousin, Md Rubel, said Sadia went out to see a doctor with her uncle and grandfather. On their way back, she fell into the drain. Her uncle and grandfather also jumped into the drain to rescue her but she went to missing.

Earlier, a vegetable trader named Saleh Ahmed went missing after falling into a drain in Muradpur area of the city on August 25. More than a month has passed but he has been not found yet.

Moreover, on June 30, a CNG autorickshaw fell into the Chashma canal in Gate No 2 area of the city, killing two people, including a woman.
