Bangladesh govt urged to urgently investigate Mohibullah killing

The Human Rights Watch in their statement urged Bangladesh government to urgently investigate the assassination of Rohingya leader Mohibullah by a group of assailants inside the victim’s office at a Rohingya camp in Cox’s Bazar.

‘Mohibullah’s death challenges not only the struggle of Rohingya refugees for greater rights and protection at the refugee camps, but also their efforts to safely return to their home in Myanmar. Bangladesh authorities should urgently investigate Mohibullah’s killing along with other attacks on Rohingya activists at the camps,’ said Meenakshi Ganguly, South Asia director of Human Rights Watch.

Mohibullah, 46, chair of the Arakan Rohingya Society for Peace and Human Rights, was killed by unidentified gunmen at Kutupalong camp in Cox’s Bazar on Wednesday.

The New York-based rights group said Mohibullah had served as a leader of the nearly one million Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh, documenting the Myanmar military’s crimes against the Rohingya and advocating for the refugees’ rights in international forums.

‘Mohibullah was a vital voice for the community of Rohingya who had already suffered unimaginable loss and pain when they arrived as refugees in Bangladesh. He always defended the rights of the Rohingyas. His killing is a stark demonstration of the risks faced by those at the camps who speak up for freedom and against violence,’ said Meenakshi Ganguly.
